In a lot of countries around the world, the obesity problem is gradually increasing . In Australia, it has been reported that more than 60% of the population is now overweight. But, it needs to be asked if this obesity is because of the food we eat or the drink we consume? Today, alcohol appears to be put into the equivalent family as sugar, soft drinks and fatty foods. Do we need to cut out or limit the amount of alcohol we consume? Some health writers suggest that excessive amounts of alcohol will lower the body's ability to burn fat, so it may be a logical thing to do. But is cutting it out altogether the best thing? In order to answer that question, the term "excessive alcohol" needs to be properly defined. The recommendations set out by the National Health and Medical Research Council state that men should have no more than four standard glasses of wine per day, while women should not have more than two glasses per day. Most people in Australia drink that amount or lower, so it can be concluded that as a whole, a glass of wine a day would be deemed low -risk with regards to liver or organ damage. However, what does this mean for the person on a diet to lose weight? Research by the Australian Wine Research Group has concluded that drinking wine in moderation does not pose a significant problem for the majority of Australians. However, people on a diet need to be aware that most wines will contain a certain amount of sugar that has been left over from the process of fermentation. This is where people who think that wine can make you fat point the finger. Sugar itself has no fat in it, but any sugars you consume that you don't later burn off, either through exercise or metabolism, will be stored by the body as fat. But, it has been found that only 6% of caloric intake in moderate wine drinkers is due to the wine they drink, which means that other sources account for 94% of the total caloric intake. To put this into perspective, a chocolate bar and an average glass of wine may have the same number of calories, but there may be 15-20 g of fat in the chocolate bar, which makes it a lot more dangerous to the person trying to cut out their daily fat intake. So what's the verdict? Wine itself is not necessarily fattening, as there is no fat in it. However, a bag of sugar is fat free as well. Lifestyle is the crucial factor. If you expect to lose weight, it comes down to a person burning off more calories than they consume. However, what if you're the type who enjoys a glass or two of wine at dinner? You may be in luck! The Department of Surgery at Monash University's Dr. John Dixon conducted research into diet and obesity for his PhD thesis. The people in the research target group were all obese and had previously undergone lap-band surgery in order to lose weight. What was interesting from the results were that those people who drank more than 100 grams per week of alcohol, especially wine had a significantly greater weight loss (ie 50% of excess weight lost in the first year) than those who had no or very little consumption. From these results, he concluded that the "results demonstrate that light to moderate alcohol consumption, especially wine consumption, is associated with a lower prevalence of type 2 diabetes, improved insulin sensitivity and more favourable cardiovascular risk profile in the severely obese." It can also be assumed that wine can have similar results and benefits to people who are not obese. By itself, wine is not fattening; but you need to be aware that there are calories present in every glass of wine, so they will need to be burnt off or they will be stored as excess fat on your body. So, as long as moderation is the theme of your wine consumption, enjoying a glass or two of wine at dinner will not adversely affect your diet if you are trying to lose weight. As long as you stay within the recommendations, enjoying a glass or two of wine every now and then should not make you feel guilty.
