Recognised as one of the biggest telecommunications companies in the United Kingdom, O2 was founded in 1985 by BT Mobile Division's then CEO, John Carrington. Initially named Cellnet it was a mobile phone service operator owned in a 60:40 venture between BT and Securicor. In 1999 Securicor agreed to sell its share in the company to BT and as a result it was given a new name - BT Cellnet. When BT acquired Cellnet it had around five million customers. The name didn't stick though and BT Cellnet was renamed once again, this time to O2. Other telecommunication subsidiaries owned by BT also became O2; German business Viag Interkom, Dutch company Telfort Mobiel and Irish firm Esat Digifone all became rebranded as O2. The rebrand was backed by an innovative advertising campaign designed to give the company a new brand identity. After the rebrand O2 enjoyed a considerable amount of success, but would experience further change in November 2005. At this point Spanish telecommunications giant, Telef?nica, agreed to buy the company in a deal worth a staggering ?17.7 billion. As part of the deal O2 was allowed to keep it's relatively recently acquired name, retain its brand and continue to be based in the UK. By the end of December 2007, 02 had around 29,000 employees and managed to attract in excess of 40 million customers around Europe. During this period the organisational structure of O2's parent company, Telef?nica, was comprehensively changed, resulting in a number of the telecommunication companies it owned that weren't from Spain being transferred into the O2 brand. Therefore well-known European firms - owned by Telef?nica - such as Eurotel, from the Czech Republic, and Telef?nica Deutschland became part of O2. The telecommunications companies situated outside of Europe were kept under Telef?nica's Movistar brand. Well known for having creative slogans that stick in the mind, including "It's your O2" and "We're better, connected," O2 has branched out considerably since its beginnings as a mobile phone services provider. In the current era it is also considered to be a leader in the areas of non-voice services and communications - such as text messaging - and data connections - including 3G, which is quickly growing in popularity - as well as continuing to offer great mobile services. With the world of mobile communication one that relies on innovation, O2 has also unveiled plans to feature NFC technology in its UK phones. A piece of technology that is expected to become commonplace in the near future, NFC - or near field communication - allows smartphones to connect when they touch - potentially revolutionising the way in which people make payments. It has also recognised the need for companies to be more environmentally friendly, becoming the first mobile telecommunications firm to be awarded a Carbon Trust Standard certificate. Awarded to the company in 2009, this certificate recognises its commitment to lowering its overall carbon footprint. Unsurprisingly the company has received many plaudits for its environmental efforts. O2 continues to provide a wide range of great mobile services in the modern era; this coupled with its commitment to great incentive schemes - such as Priority Moments - has helped it cement its reputation as a fantastic telecommunications provider.

O2 is one of the most well-known providers of telecommunication services in the UK. This article examines the company's history.
