What Are Pesticides?

What are pesticides? Definition of the term

What are pesticides? Pesticides are chemical compounds or biological agents that destroy pests by means of various mechanisms and effects. Pesticides avert, kill, and control pests. Among different pests may be pathogens, vectors of various diseases, undesirable species of plants, insects, birds, and animals. These pests may be detrimental because they interfere with the production and storage of human food and animal forage. Pesticides may be also used on animals to control insects and other parasites affecting them. In agriculture, pesticides are applied to protect crops from harmful weeds, insects, and diseases.

What are pesticides and pests?

Pests are living organisms, which produce damage to humans, animals, and plants. Pests are represented by various species of living organisms. Particularly important as pests are insects, mites, worms, fish, birds, mammals, weeds, fungi, bacteria and viruses. Pests are destructive for agriculture because they feed on crops and parasitize on livestock. Pests are able to develop resistance to pesticides, which needs higher pesticide doses to overcome this resistance or switching to new pesticides.

What are pesticides and how to classify them?

Pesticides are classified by chemical structure, physical state and application methods. Pesticides can be inorganic, synthetic, or biological. Pesticides can be also classified by target pests. They embrace insecticides for insects, fungicides for mold and fungi, herbicides for plants, rodenticides for mice and rats, and antimicrobials for bacteria and viruses.

What are pesticides and their mechanisms of action?

Pesticides control pests interfering physically, chemically or biologically with their metabolic activity and behavior. Many pesticides are pest poisons. Some pesticides kill the target pests. Other pesticides, such as repellents, attractants, and sterilizing agents do not provoke pest death. Some insecticides act by disturbing the balance of sodium and potassium in the nerve fibers. Others inhibit acetyl cholinesterase and produce paralyses. Herbicides may affect the nutrient transport systems of the plants or can inhibit photosynthesis. http://whatarepesticides.com/
