Does the water out of your tap have some kind of metallic taste? Or, as my six year old would say about her schools water fountain water, "it tastes bloody, mom," I don't believe she has ever tasted blood before, but in her mind that is what it would taste like. Water with iron in it can also make food turn black during cooking. More than just taste and the appearance of food, elevated levels of iron in your tap water has implications for your health. The fact that excess iron is stored in your body and has various health implications means you want to look at getting it fixed sooner rather than later. Rather than 'bleach' your water with chemicals, you should look at a natural approach to filtering your water and making it healthier to drink, such as diatomaceous earth filtration.

First of all, be aware that having some traces of iron in your water isn't a terrible thing. Get your water tested and see what the levels of iron are at the moment so you know what you are working with. Prior to deciding what to do though, check the pH level as well to check you are able to filter the iron from the water. Do this before you begin any treatment.

Depending on the type of iron in your water, the solution is slightly different to filtering your water. Don't believe there are different types of iron? Well there are: soluble iron, oxidized iron, bacterial iron, colloidal iron and organic-bound iron. And you thought iron was just iron didn't you!

If you are dealing with bacterial iron then you will find your appliances getting clogged up and this needs to be treated with chlorine. As this is a bacterium you will have to treat your water periodically to stop it building up again. Colloidal iron on the other hand is a buildup of small particles that are complete with static electric charge. Chlorine or granulated activated carbon filters can help you out in this instance. People often get confused between organic bound iron and colloidal iron. When you are treating your water for organic bound iron however, you need to monitor it more frequently whether using a carbon filter or chlorine. Oxidized iron, characterized by its red particle form, disappears with the use of diatomaceous earth, and a chemical dosing of a coagulant. Diatomaceous earth is a chalky type of substance that is formed by a natural earth process consisting mostly of silica, as well as iron, magnesium, and sodium. If you have soluble iron in your water you will be noticing stains. When it gets in contact with air then the soluble iron begins to rust. In order to deal with the sludge that builds up, treat your water with chlorine twice a year and get yourself a carbon filter. Other options include aeration, and greensand plus more.

When looking at how you are treating the water though, you want to look at the costs involved. You may find that a new well or a reconstruction could be a more cost effective solution. If you care about your water and its taste then diatomaceous earth filtration is one of the top options to consider.
