Diabolos are certainly not too cool for school! The diabolo craze seems to run and run with children all over the country, and the world, hankering for the best diabolos around.

You can get super-cheap, poorly made diabolos from toys shops and supermarkets but these are a false economy as they have a habit of falling apart in a matter of hours. They also tend to be badly balanced meaning that learning the diabolo becomes that bit harder.

For the best value diabolos you have to spend a little bit more but you'll get a well-made, well-balanced bit of kit at a price that's still affordable after saving a few weeks' pocket money. The best beginner's/children's diabolo out there at the moment is the Mr Babache Harlequin. The success of this toy has prompted it to be copied and reproduced in China. The result is the Jester diabolo - still a well-made prop but it doesn't quite live up to the Harlequin. Clutch, or bearing, diabolos have axles that can spin in one direction, like the Cyclone, Cyclone Quartz, Sundia Fly, Shining and the Henry's free hub. These help you to get the diabolo spinning very fast which gives you more time to perform and learn tricks. The downsides are that some tricks are impossible (string climbs) and the axle will need replacing at some point as the bearings wear out or get dirty. Triple bearing diabolos spin even quicker than standard toys of this sort.

For advanced level diabolists, the most popular and best diabolos in the world are from Henry's and Mr Babache. Their Circus and Finesse G4 models are favoured by many top players. Sundia also make a great top-end diabolo in the form of the Sun. These models are also great for running two or more diabolos at the same time.

You will, of course, need some hand sticks to get your diabolo spinning. There are almost as many types of sticks as there are diabolos. Wooden sticks are the cheapest at just a couple of pounds but these can break and the thick width makes stick grinds more difficult. The most popular type of diablo sticks are aluminium (metal) ones. These are strong but lightweight and great for grinds. They also have a string fixing system that keeps the knot out of the way. Other types of handstick include carbon fibre or fibreglass sticks that are super-strong and rigid or flexible respectively. You can even get sticks which glow in the dark either with LEDs or luminous colouring.

Diabolo string is another essential. Depending on use, the string will wear away eventually so having some spare is a great idea. Henry's make the best string but Mr Babache also produces decent diabolo string. Other, less well known brands are fine for kids and beginner/intermediate play but advanced players will notice the difference between these and the superior Henry's diabolo string. Reels of replacement string are available in lengths of 10m, 25m, 70m or 100m.

You can learn diabolo tricks from friends, at juggling festival and conventions, circus skills workshops and You Tube videos. If you need some extra tuition there are quite a few books and DVDs you can learn diabolo tricks, stunts and moves from. Donald Grant's series of books are, perhaps, the most popular and comprehensive diabolo lessons available.
