The international jury of the Creative Tourism Awards selected five, among a hundred of initiatives and destinations from ten countries, that highlight for their commitment to this emerging sector.

Based on the criteria of quality, originality, innovation and sustainability, the prizes were awarded to:

• Best Creative Best Destination 2014: Crikvenica Tourist Board (Croatia)

• Best Creative Travel Agency 2014: Wild at Art (Scotland)

• Best Creative Residency 2014: Cerdeira Art & Craft (Portugal)

• Best Creative Experience 2014 (ex-aequo): 5 Bogota (Colombia)

• Best Creative Experience 2014 (ex-aequo): Istra Inspirit (Croatia)

 

Société Marocaine d’Ingénierie Touristique –SMIT (Morocco) – Tourism Engineering and Investment. The Jury appreciated the use of the creativity as an inclusive and structuring element for the tourism sector as well as for the local communities. Indeed, the project presented by SMIT involves the locals in the development of creative activities and experiences offered then to the tourists. This strategic choice reflects the strong commitment of the Moroccan tourism sector for a sustainable and innovative tourism. Morocco is the destination BY EXCELLENCE to promote the creative tourism and invite the tourists to experience the richness of its intangible heritage, traditions and friendliness!

Located on the Adriatic coast, the Tourist Board of the City of Crikvenica (Croatia), invites its inhabitants and local entities to be part of the organization of the cultural and traditional events. This contributes to offer the visitors a genuine experience and to make them discover the authentic local culture. Such experiences are a way to interact with tourists as they can actively participate in cooking workshops, crafts, traditional dances and songs etc. It aims to offer the visitors a different, sustainable and creative tourism, for them … not to feel like tourists! Our focus has been on activities and events in the low and middle season and that create opportunities for the private sector to actively contribute to the development of creative tourism.

 

Wild-at-Art is a young creative tourism business founded by Ellen Colingsworth and Ute Johnston in 2012. Both Ellen (US American) and Ute (German) have been living in Scotland for many years and are passionate about art and all things creative. The idea for Wild at Art was born out of the desire to open up Scotland’s buzzing creative richness to visitors from other countries and allow them to see Scotland from a completely different angle from traditional holiday packages. Rather than stumbling across galleries and studios by coincidence when already in the country, visitors can choose a holiday package including a workshop for an art activity, hand-picked accommodation, meals, transport, exhibition visits and more. We work and travel in small groups to ensure the personal Wild at Art touch. The project offers local Scottish artists a platform to enhance the awareness and appreciation of Scottish culture and creative variety. Different packages take place in different locations and focus on different art and craft activities. Activities include drawing and painting, stone carving, textile and fibre art, jewellery making, and silver smithing.

 

Istra Inspirit stands for (so far) 10 revived stories, myths and legends of Istrian peninsula in which they present those stories in the most creative and innovative ways. Interactive performances and thematic dinners on authentic locations (such as castles, lighthouses, coal mines, medieval towns etc.) is what makes us different from usual events held in closed area where performers don't have communication with their audience. The performances are interactive; the audience is included in each part of the story in various ways (they learn how to make a bread, they are a part of a witch trial, pirates games and battles…). Another principle is that we include locals in our experiences becuse we believe that they should be presenters of their culture. Their main objectives are to valorize tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Istria, involve the locals in creating cultural experiences and preserve traditions from being forgotten.

5Bogota is located in Bogota the capital of Colombia. They create tourism experiences to explore the city through the 5 senses and hand of the local people, becoming their daily activities in unique experiences. In this way the tourism contributes with the local social fabric development. For that purpose they have created a experience lab which is the way to give to our activities a special print, where the 5 senses are the principal characters. The local community is their main allied because they personify the cultural practices, and through them is the unique way to create the special link “tourist-territory” . By the other hand our local hosts are people out the tourism industry, so for them the experiences become in a new income. In this way the tourism helps to the local development.

The aim of Cerdeira Village Art & Craft project is to transform our village into the Portuguese craft center, to make it a place for sharing and communicating with artists and creative individuals. It’s about giving new live and meaning to a very special place, Cerdeira, one of the classified schist villages in the ”Serra da Lousã”, a small place surrounded by fresh brooks and silence in an ocean of mountains in the center of Portugal. Abandoned in the late 1970th by its rural population for social and economic reasons, the architectural heritage is nowadays almost completely restored including ecological and sustainable aspects. One of its main offers consists of master classes and open sessions of: Chestnut woodcarving, Raku, Earthenware illustration, Nuno-felting, Relieved Tile, Tile Painting, Woodcarving with power tools, etc. It also host artist-in-residency during the spring and summer at our Casa das Artes (“House of Arts”). Hosting artists brings a wave of creativity to our village. Our visitors seek to surround themselves with other creative and enthusiastic individuals!
