When talking about environmental cars, many will refer to electric cars - such as the Peugeot iOn - or hybrid vehicles - like the Toyota Prius. However, there are a number of models that take have taken environmental standards to a new level. Incredibly eye-catching and very rare, the majority of these environmental cars are one-offs produced as part of promotional projects. Instead of being produced from the standard mix of metals - featured in standard cars - they are made from materials that even the most inventive car designer might consider to be unorthodox. Here are just a couple of the best environmental cars produced from unorthodox materials: The Racing Car Manufactured from Food: Yes, you did just read that correctly; this car is made from a selection of the foods you've probably got stored in your fridge. Painstakingly designed and built by Warwick University's International Automotive Research Centre, this car - based on an F3 model - features a body constructed from potatoes and a steering wheel made up of fibres taken from carrots; its seat is softened out by foam made from soybeans. As well as being manufactured from foods, it also runs on food - making it one of the most unique environmental cars on the planet. Utilising oils extracted from chocolate, this unique F3 model can reach pretty impressive speeds too. Sadly, though, it has been banned from use in races because it doesn't run on conventional fuel types. Despite this the team that built this car deserve a huge amount of praise; replicating the appearance of an F3 model from household foods is one thing, but creating a fully-operational, eco-friendly racing car is simply incredible. The White Gold Mercedes: You might wonder what exactly makes a Mercedes V10 Quad Turbo sports car one of the best environmental cars, and understandably so. Specially built by the German manufacturer for an Emirati billionaire, it runs on bio-diesel. Looking like a cross between a Bond car and something pulled straight from the Tron universe, this car certainly catches the eye - an attribute associated with many environmental cars in the modern era. Decorated with a reported $2.5 billion worth of white gold, light glimmers off of its sleek bodywork. The V10 quad turbo engine enables this Mercedes model - probably one of the most luxurious environmental cars - to go from nought to 100km/h (kilometres per hour) in less than two seconds - pretty amazing, right? The Car Produced from Cotton: Typically used in the production of shirts, the car made from cotton was produced in East Germany, when the country was under Communist rule. Invented by Wolfgang Barthel, it was designed as a cheaper alternative to cars manufactured from steel. At the time steel prices were incredibly high, which also made the cotton car an economical option, as well as one of the earliest environmental cars. Known as the Trabi - a shortened version of the Sachsenring Trabant - its body was made of moulded cotton and it featured only five moving parts. Despite offering a good driving experience and being one of the first environmental cars to go on sale, the Trabi's popularity faded quickly.

Hybrid and electric models are usually referred to as environmental cars. This article looks at three environmental cars manufactured from unusual materials.
